EQUINE ASSISTED LEARNING: SYMBOLIC VALUE OF HORSE AS UNDERLYING PATTERN IN HUMAN THINKING

2018

Traditional pedagogy do not stressed the unique and challenging needs of the adult learner for a different kind of educational experience that was more engaging, more flexible and more appreciative of the existing knowledge base and experience of the adult learning. Equine Assisted Learning is a practice in which adults engage in systematic and sustained self–educating activities in order to gain new forms of knowledge, skills, attitudes, or values. The purpose of this research is to illustrate the meaning and symbolic value of horse as underlying pattern in human thinking.

West Nile Disease (WND) in Sicily

2012

WND is an emerging vector-borne zoonosis caused by an RNA virus included in the Japanese encephalitis group within the Flavivirus genus. In Italy, after the first appearance in Tuscany in 1998, West Nile Virus (WNV) has been continuously circulating since 2008. A National Surveillance Program consisting of monitoring horses, “sentinel poultries”, wild bird mortality and mosquitoes is active in the entire national territory since 2002. Authors describe the outbreaks which occurred in Sicily in 2010 and 2011. Case study: Between September-October 2010, seven horses from the western part of the island, in the Trapani province, showed neurological symptoms. In October 2011, another two horses s…

Symbolic dynamics in a binary asteroid system

2020

We highlight the existence of a topological horseshoe arising from a a--priori stable model of the binary asteroid dynamics. The inspection is numerical and uses correctly aligned windows, as described in a recent paper by A. Gierzkiewicz and P. Zgliczy\'nski, combined with a recent analysis of an associated secular problem.

Tracking Five Millennia of Horse Management with Extensive Ancient Genome Time Series

2019

Summary Horse domestication revolutionized warfare and accelerated travel, trade, and the geographic expansion of languages. Here, we present the largest DNA time series for a non-human organism to date, including genome-scale data from 149 ancient animals and 129 ancient genomes (≥1-fold coverage), 87 of which are new. This extensive dataset allows us to assess the modern legacy of past equestrian civilizations. We find that two extinct horse lineages existed during early domestication, one at the far western (Iberia) and the other at the far eastern range (Siberia) of Eurasia. None of these contributed significantly to modern diversity. We show that the influence of Persian-related horse …

Monumenti della natura: i castagni dell'Etna - Natural monuments: Mount Etna's chestnut trees

2017

The article addresses the importance of ancient tree crops in the Italian landscape. It dwells on the need for a long-standing census on knowledge, preservation and promotion of these trees and q…

Genome‐wide survey on three local horse populations with a focus on runs of homozygosity pattern

2022

Purosangue Orientale Siciliano, Sanfratellano and Siciliano represent the Sicilian equine genetic resource. This study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity, population structure and the pattern of autozygosity of Sicilian horse populations using genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data generated with the Illumina Equine SNP70 array. The genotyping data of 17 European and Middle East populations were also included in the study. The patterns of genetic differentiation, model-based clustering and Neighbour-Net showed the expected positioning of Sicilian populations within the wide analysed framework and the close connections between the Purosangue Orientale Siciliano and the…
